Cooking classes developed for 9-12 year-olds.
We strive to create a more educated, able and healthy society.
Classes run year-round and are organized by age group (ages 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, and 13-18). Each 3-hour class, students are empowered to cook on their own, which builds confidence, independence, and healthy eating habits, all while gaining practical life skills, learning food literacy, and polishing up their table manners by sharing meals around the LKA community table. Classes are available 7-days a week and we are open year-round, including certain holidays, and offer camps during Summer, Winter, and Spring breaks.
The curriculum We provide a safe and empowering environment that embraces each child’s own way of learning.
Our three-hour work cycle for children 9-12 years old begins when the children change into their chef’s coat and are shown how to properly wash their hands.
Together, we work through elevated recipes, collecting, washing, and preparing our ingredients. We encourage our students to make substitutions based on their personal interests and tastes. We show our students how to safely handle kitchen equipment and clean up after themselves. We set the table and enjoy the delicious dish they made while practicing our table manners. We lead discussions on how to change the recipe next time.
- 9-12-year-old students are becoming very aware of their social surroundings, and we encourage conversation around different dietary beliefs and needs.
- Understanding the important developmental stage they are entering, we ask questions rather than always provide instruction.
- We encourage the students to make substitutions based on their personal interests and tastes.
- Using proper recycling and composting practices feed into their interest in their immediate environment, prompting conversations around eating locally and organically.
- Encouraging thought on how to tweak recipes builds confidence, perhaps one day eliminating the “there’s nothing to eat” statement when looking at a full refrigerator!
- We lead discussions on how to change the recipe next time.
Food Philosophy
Giving Back
My daughter had the most amazing time at LKA. She is quite picky, but had no trouble trying new foods she prepared in this nurturing environment. She now wants to recreate the foods she made and try out new recipes. I wish there were more locations!
